Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the kick-off to this year's holiday shopping season is just a few short days away!   

Regardless of whether Fido has been naughty or nice this year, it's always fun to give during the holidays.  Or heck, buy a little something for yourself too!  I've put together a list of holiday gift ideas for your dog and dog-loving friends featuring several local Houston businesses.

Gift ideas for your dog

1) New ID tag.  It's so important for your pup to have a collar with up-to-date contact information.  Thought Blossoms creates simple, personalized pet ID tags - I especially love the hammered designs!

2) New digs.  For the stylish pups, how about a new outfit?  Funny Fur carries a huge selection of doggie clothes, from hoodies and sweaters to jackets and formal wear.

4) Homemade dog treats.  The Doggie Express whips up some of the most beautiful dog cookies I have ever seen, and even better, they deliver!

5) Playdates.  While you're putting in the long hours at work, why not spoil your pup with a visit to doggie daycare?  Depending on what part of town you're in, there are many great choices:

6) Quality time with you.  Instead of buying something for your dog, you can commit to exploring the city together, such as trying out a new dog park or dog friendly restaurant each month.

3) Sweet stories about dogs.  The following books are all highly recommended. Some of the stories are quite moving, so you might need a box of tissues (speaking from personal experience!)

5) Willow Tree Angel of Friendship figurine.  This line of figurative sculptures are simple, classic, and comforting.

6) Funny coffee mug.  I found so many cute ones on Etsy, my favorites being "Namaste home with my dog" and "I shih tzu not!"

7) Donation to a dog rescue group or animal shelter.   Giving to others is rewarding, and the holiday season is the perfect time to pay it forward.  No matter how much or how little you donate, your time and/or money can help pets get a second chance for a happy life!

Houston dog-friendly events for September 2016

With the summer behind us, we're all cursing the extra traffic and wishing for cooler weather.  But the good news is that fall brings more dog-friendly events and fundraisers for Houston's pet shelters and rescue groups.  September looks like a fun month with activities from biking to painting to pub trivia.  Get out there and enjoy y'all!

Things to do with your dog in Houston (September 2016):

  • September 9: Fierce & Fabulous Soiree put on by Houston PetSet.  Enjoy a fancy night out at The Astorian for food, cocktails, dancing, and live and silent auctions.  This big event raises funds for many of Houston's local rescue groups.
  • September 10: Pub & Pedal for Pups bike and brew ride around the Heights, benefitting Pup Squad Animal Rescue.  BYO Bike!
  • September 14: CAP 2016 Gala Kick-off.  The actual Gala is not until November, but enjoy sips and lite bites at Tootsies while supporting Citizens for Animal Protection.
  • September 17: Picasso's by Paws.  Bayou City Outdoors presents a fun painting party at where your dog gets to be the artist!  Held at Urban Tails and benefitting Houston SNAP.
  • September 17: Mutts, Meows & Margaritas.  Evening at Mo's for food, drinks, music, silent & live auctions, benefitting BARC.
  • September 21: Geeks Who Drink Puppy Pub Quiz.  Fundraiser at Little J's Bar on Washington benefitting Corridor Rescue.
  • September 23: Midtown Houston's Yappy Hour in Bagby Park.  Monthly pet-friendly happy hour features treats, contests, and prizes.

Things to do in Houston with dogs - August 2016

The picture of Ziggy below says it all!  It's Houston.  It's summertime.  It's hot.  Wishing you and your pup plenty of lazy afternoons in the pool!  And if you're brave enough to go out on the town, there are a few dog-friendly events in Houston this month.

Things to do with your dog in Houston (August 2016):

  • August 3: Pup Sport Dog Run in Clear Lake.  For active dogs, enjoy a dog-friendly run with Jackie's Brickhouse Running Club along Clear Lake Shore followed by a free dinner.
  • August 26: Midtown Houston's Yappy Hour in Bagby Park.  Monthly pet-friendly happy hour features treats, contests, and prizes. 
  • August 28: Houston Astros Bark in the Park at Minute Maid Park.  Bring your pup to watch the Astros take on the Tamp Bay Rays at 1pm, but come early to enjoy all the festivities!  Leashed dogs welcome, and show your Astros spirit!
