Now that January is almost over, how are you doing on your New Year's resolutions? Right on track? Or did you just scarf down an entire batch of cookies while wasting 3 hours of your life watching The Bachelor? Wait, that's just me?!? Well, for those of us needing a pep talk, here are four ways your dog can help you get back on track with your resolutions:
It's the most common resolution... While the gym is still uber crowded, why not dust off your pup’s leash and hit the pavement instead? I always enjoy the high from getting fresh air and exercise. For days when the weather doesn't cooperate, some indoor fetch or tug of war is good too.
Years ago I read that the simple act of petting your dog helps reduce stress. Have you tried it? It totally works! Next time you’re having a bad day, take a deep breath, snuggle up with your pooch (bonus points if you actually get down on the floor) and give him/her a good ear scratch or belly rub. It’s a win-win!
Live your life
Dogs don't typically have to balance work and life like humans, but we can still take notes from our pup’s behavior. When your dog chases a squirrel, or dozes off on the couch, or is fixated on the treat in your hand – are they thinking about anything else? Heck no! They are focused and in the moment. So when you’re spending time with your friends and family and you get distracted by work or TV or social media, try to think like a dog: concentrate on what's important and live life to the fullest!
There are many awesome organizations and volunteers improving the lives of animals. Consider volunteering at a local rescue group, or fostering an adoptable pet. Who knows, you may end up with a new best friend!
What are your resolutions? Is your dog helping you achieve them?
